The New York Rangers, a New York based professional ice hockey team is the member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the NHL. With Madison Square Garden as an arena, the Rangers is the oldest team in the NHL, that joined in 1925 and became part of the Original Six. The New York Rangers won the Stanley Cup four times, most recently in 1994. At the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, the Rangers chose Alexei Cherepanov as 17th overall player. Cherepanov had been ranked by Central Scouting as the number one European skater and was considered to be a top five pick. The 2007 free agency season started by signing two high profile centerman players, Scott Gomez from the New Jersey Devils and Chris Drury from the Buffalo Sabres. Along with retention of the key New York Rangers players, the Rangers are amongst one of the favorablly strong contenders of Stanley Cup.
