Composed in 1891–92, and based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, a story by E. T. A. Hoffmann, The Nutcracker is a fairy tale-ballet by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The instrument the composer employed in one of his less acclaimed symphonic poem, the celesta was used in the ballet. The Nutcracker lyrics in Tchaikovsky’s ballet are the composer's most popular one referring to the Romantic Period containing most memorable melodies. The Nutcracker musical has the most recognizable pieces of dance The Trepak--- the Russian dance, with Waltz of the Flowers and March. During the Christmas season of 1961, ABC presented a special musical entitled The Enchanted Nutcracker. A variation of The Nutcracker is displayed in the Broadway musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie” featuring the well praised lyrics and jazz versions of the dances within The Nutcracker, especially the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
