Based on the 1989 animated The Little Mermaid movie, and the 1836 Hans Christian Andersen classic fairy tale, “The Little Mermaid”, the musical stage play replaces Disney's successful "Beauty and the Beast" -- that closed in July after 13 years. This Disney production opened officially on December 6, 2007." Elements of the 70-minute film have been expanded for this Disney production and re-imagined by director Francesca Zambello, best known as an opera director. One of the changes from The Little Mermaid movie is to tack on a singing contest, in which princesses vie to win the prince in marriage.
