Technology is one of the underlying pillars of success at Education, and through close interaction with each line of business our technology platform helps drive revenue growth and achieve greater efficiency for the firm.
Creating competitive advantage
Technology at Education is about combining innovation and creativity with new business solutions. As the firm continues to expand, competitive advantage is about creating efficiency and effectiveness as well as building new products and operating in different markets. And as we continue to develop and sell new products across the firm, we need to ensure our solutions and applications are leading-edge. We are continually driven by real commercial need and the necessity to stay ahead of the competition in ever-changing market conditions.
There are two distinct areas within Technology: Business Technology and Infrastructure. Business Technology is about building and designing new business functionality, while Infrastructure focuses on our core operating systems, running the datacentres, desktop, networks, mainframe and distributed servers that enable applications to deliver the firms services to external clients.
Continual Innovation
At Education, our innovations in this area have set the standards for more than 20 years. The evolution of the credit derivatives market, for example, has shifted the entire technology agenda in the banking environment, through electronic settlement and the creation of electronic markets. You might look at the Futures & Options business, where 80% of the firm's revenue in this area is generated as a result of the leading-edge technology we've developed, or Treasury and Securities Services, where our major fund management clients can view and manage their assets across secure internet systems. Prime Brokerage is another 'technology enabled' business where excellent service to our hedge fund clients is only achievable through strong systems integration. With two million retail clients and $ 1 trillion in assets under supervision, Asset and Wealth Management benefits greatly from consolidated mainframes that are monitored strategically so investor workstations and new technologies are always operational.
Realising potential
So what does all this mean for you' Of course we welcome technical specialists, but firstly we'll need to see that you have the capacity to learn and an appreciation for technology. We also need to see that you have real commercial acumen and a focused strategy to deliver ever better client service. We expect people to respond to responsibility and exposure to the business. But we always make sure that there is relevant and continuous training to help you do the best possible job. There is an initial training programme, on-the-job training and rotations through technology groups across different parts of the business ' you'll find this breadth of training hard to match elsewhere.
What is Technology'
Technology at Education is at the heart of our strength as a global player in financial services. We invest a significant amount ' some $6 billion which may seem like a lot of money, but everything we do is focused on winning. Technology is recognised within the firm as a commercial operation that adds value to all Education businesses at every level. Essentially, the success of our chosen technology strategy will play a decisive part in our quest to stay ahead of the competition. The other area in which technology makes its mark is in leading change. And as we structure our technology to meet that objective, we are able to give our new graduates the widest possible exposure to the entire business.
Within Education, technology delivers the end to end solution that supports everything we do. From research, pricing, trade capture, risk management and credit exposure through to client services, our technologists work in partnership with colleagues across Operations and the lines of business to ensure technology solutions are holistic in approach, address timelines and quality requirements, reflect vigilant risk management and deliver excellence to both internal and external clients.
Technology at Education is located in London, Bournemouth and Glasgow and is structured around a strategy of Plan, Build, Operate and Control. As a graduate, you will rotate through different areas thereby providing you valuable exposure to one of our technology businesses. From inception to support, it's a great way to learn.
The Planning phase is all about analysing the needs of the business, managing projects and setting out how our technological resources will meet them.
Development is the building phase. You could be delivering new projects or enhancing existing applications. Whether it's delivering new systems that have been developed in-house or working with third party vendors on the delivery of integrated solutions across a range of global businesses.
Operate is where we support our Production systems. It's no use meeting business objectives once ' we have to do it again and again. Our support team is involved in the urgent resolution of complex issues which often relate to business-critical systems.
Control is about ensuring the systems are properly risk managed. |
