| Web Design & Development
Introduction
Web Design and Development has become an integral part of the World Wide Web and international transactions across the world. The entire world is now revolving around sophisticated tools that utilize extensive inputs from the web and go through veneers of calculations and algorithms prior to establishing outputs that became a part of the statistical data used by various teams, organizations and companies to further streamline processes. In its true essence, web design and development is the heart beat of all www communication. Without web development and a revolution into the different web design tools available in the market, the web sites that are currently available today would still be outdated and void.
Web design and development is an art that can be learnt from different applications, codes and tools. Web design is unique in a way that it allows the users to customize the requirements and utilize state of the art applications. There are really only two perspectives of the entire equation. Many of the educational institutes focus on hard core coding that allows the students the flexibility of building and maneuvering the websites according to the requirements but also tends to build complex web site codes that is not easily customizable for others as the complexities and requirements increase. The codes become the properties of the creators and it takes time and energy to decode and variances. Though it is an exciting and exponential learning curve for the majority of computer science majors and web design majors, it is still not a highly acclaimed skill-set that the majority of engineering students have.
The other perspective is gearing up for the multitude of applications that are available in the market to cater to the ongoing needs of the market. A plethora of applications and tools are now available for students and teachers alike to build on the requirements and create enormous web design sites with all the bells and whistles.
It is imperative that the strategies and policies in place cater to both segments o the market. The educational institutions need to ensure that their labs are fully equipped with all the software applications that can truly provide the students with the vision and curriculum requirements to move into the web design and development jobs. The curriculum needs to emphasize standards-based and accessible design, is cross-platform and vendor-neutral, and is freely available for teachers to use in their own classrooms. The software applications should not be specific in nature and cater to only one subset of web design and not align the skill set with the entire domain requirements.
The primal goal of all the strategies and policies in place is to ensure that the students learn how to critically evaluate website quality, learn how to create and maintain quality web pages, learn about web design standards and why they're important, and learn to create and manipulate images. The course progresses from introductory work on web design to a culminating project in which students design and develop websites for local community organizations. Local research and projects need to be funded and this kind of social exercise allows the students to work with the daily requirements in the field and optimize their own skill sets as well.
Project base development is the key to ensuring a quality oriented web design and development curriculum in all universities and colleges. Project based curriculums allow students to gain the skills and project-based experience needed for entry into web design and development careers. Secondly, it provides the students able to use a variety of strategies and tools to create websites.
