Purpose Of Education

The importance and effect of education has been always put forward as a way towards the prosperity and clarity in the life patterns on an individual and collective level of any society and country. It is considered to be a basic human right of every individual and the industrially developed countries show a result of such phenomenon. The whole of Muslim world accepts any sort of information and different things arriving in our countries with the mark of literacy and education. We have never given a second thought to the concept about the need of producing so many degree holders in a country based on the demand of the local market. If we look at the developed countries then it is clearly seen that the numbers of doctors, engineers, etc in a given country based on the standards in the industrially advanced countries. It is tragically alarming that nobody in the Muslim world is giving attention to the real purpose of the education.

We have borrowed our present concept of education is to provide for the economic prosperity of a country. It is equally important to consider the personal goal of having a respectable living as the outcome of the education. Off course in Islam, we find so much emphasis on the importance of hard work and to earn a living with ‘halal’ means.

But it is important to realize the long forgotten role of education as to provide any human a chance to learn different things with respect to their instincts and the use of logic in the case too. Human beings are subject to change by nature to follow only those ways that is necessary performance of function of any society in a positive manner. They need to have a common goal and to strive for that that choice is the sharing of common goals, beliefs, values and outlook on life. It is not possible for any society to exist for a longer time without having a common framework to bind its members. It is equally important to preserve those norms and practices in its original form, so that the coming generation would also follow the same pattern. The education system of a society produces the citizens and leaders needed for the smooth operation of that society, now and into the future.

If we look at the present scenario in the Muslim World, we can find many internal problems --- corruption, injustice, poverty and many other things. It is very easily predictable that the situation is largely due to the man made education system that produced the people who perpetuate the problems. It is easy for us to evaluate for ourselves the damages of the secular system of education being imposed upon us by the foreign rulers and also by the will of our own ruling class. That is the reason for not being able to see much of Islamic manners and morals in our daily social and personal matters. Our imported education system has thrown us into middle of nowhere. Moral training was always an important part of our Muslim societies. The teacher was not just a lecturer or mere professional, but a mentor and moral guide.

If we look at the western history, it is interesting to note that in U.S. and Europe, the schools were started by the church. Only at later stages the capitalism had a hold over it. They made an effort to change the image of the education and the moral training was a result of the some of the leftover component of the old education. If we look at the imported versions being prevailed in the Muslim countries, that limited component has been eliminated and ultimately causing the low moral standards in the Muslim societies.

We can easily address our problem and able to solve it only by understanding the mistakes made at different intervals of time by our rulers and the general public too. We should acknowledge the basic purpose of our education system must be to produce qualified citizens and leaders for the Islamic society.
