Community Education

Community education is a concept that refers to educating a community. Now, a community can be described in different ways. It may be described as a group [any ethnic make up] of any number of people living in a certain location. A community may also refer to an ethnic group living in scattered locations. However, community education has more to do with a location in which people from different backgrounds live. It tends to apply more to educating people of any ethnic make up living in a fixed location. Therefore, it can be asserted that community education usually has nothing to do with educating an ethnic group in particular unless a whole are has one ethnic group living in it.

Community education is believed to be most advantageous in some ways. Communication education systems are thought to be most relevant to people living in a community. Since it encompasses a smaller area or a smaller number of people, it is thought to be an easily managed form of education. However, community education is controlled by a state education authority that validates the curriculum. This is an important control that must be implemented in order to streamline education processes as a whole in a country. For instance, education in the United States falls under one major authority that legitimizes curriculum.

Community education essentially focuses on educating people in a community. An authorized body within a community understands the needs and wants of a community, and on the basis of their understanding they can aid a community. Some of the considerations in community education include teaching methods. A community education system may include a variety of new experimental methods depending on the students they have. Perhaps these methods might be better received in a community as opposed to being applied on a larger scale. Should a new concept of educating work successfully, it can then be recommended to other communities.

The types of study carried out in communities are also of significant interest. While students at various stages of their education need to conduct research, the findings they come up with could be quite helpful when pieced together in a larger framework. Let’s say, there is community research conducted in diabetes. When a researcher looks for a larger study, he or she can make use of findings from a variety of communities. These findings may be helpful to pinpoint wherever diabetes seems to be most problematic. In turn, data may be provided back to a community in order for them to understand the problem, if it is deemed to be so. A community can choose to include this data when looking for remedies. They can also include it in their subject content so that community learners get to know about it. This is how awareness can be spread through community education.

Community education can be quite specialized depending on the attention it is given. Some communities tend to have an edge over others for this reason. While funding certainly plays an immense role in how standardized community education can be, volunteer availability as well as availability of professional educators matter to a great extent. All communities may not have abundant resources when it comes to this issue. Sometimes, professional educators need to be hired to work in a particular community. Fortunately, there are many top professionals available in many parts of the world. The only major criterion for hiring them is the economic factor. In the United States for example, this is a practice that is commonly employed when professional teachers are required.

Trained professionals that are available as the best educators are also licensed. This makes community education as well as other types of education well managed and standardized. Teachers are trained and certified. No teacher can really practise at the professional level if they do not have a complete education and certification to act professionally. Certainly, there are individuals who teach and are not certified, but they are not considered to be professional operators, and therefore, cannot expect to receive standard remuneration.  If a community education setup wishes to achieve excellence, it would rather opt for qualified individuals. In most cases, there is adequate funding that allows community education setups to hire professionals.
