The foundation of Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) was laid in 1963; however the college opened and began its operations in 1964. It is located on two floors of a commercial building set up in midtown Manhattan. The primal objective of the college was to offer course that were aimed specifically for the field of business. Hence the college offered a number of courses that prepared students for their business careers and apart from business studies it also provided the liberal arts education to those who wished to transfer to a four-year college. The college also facilitated the on-site management developing training courses that were aimed at mid-level employees. Due to the open admissions in the City University of New York (CUNY) in 1970, and due to the new techniques and changes introduced in the field of business college changed its visions and mission in the next 2 decades and by the year 1974 the enrollment rate of both day and evening students increased to 6000.
Initially the degrees in business oriented courses and liberal arts were offered at the BMCC, to those students who had an intention of entering the business world or to those who wanted to transfer to a four year degree college. In the beginning BMCC didn’t really had a campus of its own, in fact the campus was scattered all over the mid town Manhattan, where ever the office space was available the campus shifted there. But it was in 1970’s when CUNY began its search for a place to set up the campus of its own. The campus that BMCC is currently using has been in operations since 1983. Currently BMCC is offering associates degree in the fields of vocational, business, health, science, and continuing education, with the number of enrolled students reaching up to 19000.
BMCC is located in TriBeCa; however rest of its four campuses lie between The New York City Hall and the Financial District in Downtown Manhattan near the Hudson River.
One of the college buildings is situated at Fiterman Hall, which was situated near the world trade center, and due to its closeness to world trade center the campus was significantly damaged during the September 11, 2001 attacks. The building took a severe damage due to which the building hasn’t been in use since then. The building was donated by Miles and Shirley Fiterman. A plan is been made to reconstruct the Fiterman Hall, to be used by students and faculty, which would cost around $16 Million.
On the part of its academics college has won multiple awards from the CUNY system due to its impressive success rate at which it grants the associates degree. The College is well reputed due to its teacher to student ratio and public and private funding and due to its location which is in the heart of New York City. Apart from its academics BMCC also offers a state of the art facility for the extra-curricular activities. Basket Ball Court, Swimming pool and weight room are included in the facility. The current active teams of the college take part in sports like Basket ball, Handball, Soccer, Baseball and bowling.
